Cervical Cancer Screening – The Pastors’ Wives Project
Incidence
of cervical cancer is the highest among women of color. In response, an innovative intervention was
developed to reach African-American women in North
Minneapolis who are not being screened for cervical cancer. A long-standing Pastors’ Wives group
championed a culturally appropriate cervical cancer curriculum for female
congregants.
An
evidence-based mammography intervention was adapted to educate on cervical
cancer screening. The intervention
incorporates three components, a health professional presentation, facilitated
small group discussion addressing individual barriers, and immediate
opportunity to pledge to screen.
At the 8
host churches, 103 women participated in the intervention. Of these participants,
- 89%
reported learning new information
- 72% shared
information with others, and
- 89%
pledged to get a Pap test in the next 12 months.
Confirmed
screening is currently 11% with evaluation on-going. Participant and partner evaluations have been
overwhelmingly positive. Other African-American
churches are interested in hosting the intervention. Pastors’ Wives are training to continue
project implementation and serve as resources for their female congregants.
