Purpose
To ensure that the Minnesota Cancer Plan is based on the best data available and that proposed goals and objectives are measurable to the greatest extent possible. To facilitate the planning process by providing work groups and Steering Committee with key data on occurrence and outcomes related to cancer in Minnesota.
General Responsibilities
This committee identifies and synthesizes data-based information about cancer in Minnesota to support the development of a statewide plan to reduce cancer. The Data Review Committee provides technical expertise in the areas of cancer epidemiology, surveillance, evaluation, data collection, analyses, and interpretation to the work groups and the Steering Committee of the Minnesota Cancer Plan.
Specific responsibilities
Phase 1 (June 2003- October 2003)
- Identify sources of data that can be or are already used to directly or indirectly monitor the prevalence of cancer-related behaviors, cancer incidence, mortality, and survival, cancer treatment, quality of life of cancer survivors, and the economic costs of cancer in Minnesota.
- Compile and provide data that might best inform the creation of achievable goals and measurable objectives by work groups and the Steering Committee as they develop the Minnesota Cancer Plan.
- Determine whether there are data on economic burden of cancer for state of Minnesota.
- Review draft of Minnesota Facts & Figures (scheduled for tentative release 10/2003).
Phase 2 (November 2003-December 2004)
- Provide expert advice on data analyses and interpretation as it relates to development of objectives by work groups.
- Review indicators of the statewide plan for monitoring implementation of the plan.
- Identify gaps in utilization of existing data and gaps where no data currently exists
- Recommend new cancer data sources/systems for development
- Provide work groups and Steering Committee with additional data, as requested.
Time commitment
Attend approximately bimonthly meetings throughout the planning process (ca. 8 meetings). Members are asked to recruit a substitute if unable to attend meetings. Members may be considered inactive if they miss three consecutive meetings. Between meetings, members will be expected to review material relevant to future meetings.
Term
June 2003- January 2005.
Reporting
The Data Review Committee Chair will report to the Steering Committee.
