Friend to Friend Program - American Cancer Society

Friend to Friend is a mammography group intervention program designed to encourage women 40 and older to get regular mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer.  At a Friend to Friend program (also known as a Friend to Friend party) a woman will share conversation and refreshments in a fun and relaxed setting, hear from a health professional about why regular mammograms are so important and discuss breast and cervical health issues with friends.  In recent years, cervical cancer education component is added to the Friend to Friend program.

Alliance members who are not currently offering Friend to Friend program to their clients and/or their community members will have an opportunity to collaborate.

Attributes of Friend-to-Friend Program:

  • Aligns with Minnesota Cancer Alliance's priorities- primarily reducing disparities in cancer screening and treatment.
  • Focuses on serving those most in need including the uninsured and underinsured
  • Collaborates with community-based organizations, institutions of faith and clinics and hospitals to provide the services in diverse communities
  • Has a behavioral outcome, is evidence-based, and has a track record of success
  • Offers women the opportunity to help other women, and is implemented largely by volunteers

Grass-roots organizations and community clinics are encouraged to collaborate with the American Cancer Society to provide this program among women of color and medically under-served women.
