Brief recap of last meeting

Andrea and Pat briefly went over last meeting's discussion.  The cancer curriculum is a 3 part series intended for CHWs who work in the area of cancer who are interested in learning more about cancer.  The series title is:

 "Combating Cancer in Your Community"

Part 1 - Know Your Enemy - overview of what is cancer, terminology and basic biology

Part 2 - Know Your Strongest Opponents - 3 cancers will be highlighted; breast (with a little cervical), colorectal, and lung cancer.

Part 3 - Support for the Homefront - moderated panel discussion on providing support to patients and their families as well as learning about resources available to CHWs and their clients.

Cancer Summit agenda and materials will be sent out to the group once they are finalized. (Megersa K.)

Prostrate cancer though not included for the summit will need to be developed for this curriculum

Understanding Cancer slideshow

Jean G. and Lisa Stevens from Mayo sent an NCI slideshow on cancer for the group to possibly use during the training.  The group reviewed the slideshow (63 slides) to see if there were slides that could be used during the first part of the training (what is cancer).  Many of the slides that focused on terminology and tumor formation were good for our course.  Some of the slides were too technical and some had good themes that could be adapted into different slides.  The Cancer 101 curriculum created by the Spirit of EAGLES project is also being looked at

Andrea/Pat will pull slides together for review at the next meeting.

Part 2 Speakers

We discussed the speakers that are needed for the second part of the cancer course.  Pat R has confirmed with Dr. Pruthy, who will talk on breast and a little cervical cancer.  Andrea is contacting a physician at the U of MN Cancer Center.  We still need a speaker on lung cancer.

Andrea - colorectal cancer speaker

?? - Lung cancer speaker

Must outline what the speakers are to cover (risk factors, disease burden in MN, screening and treatment, etc.)

Part 3 - Moderator and panel

The group discussed the format of the third session and ideas for participants.  There was discussion if we should just have a panel or have a panel and a group activity such as a roundtable.  It is important to keep this course interactive, but there may not be enough time to have both a panel and a roundtable discussion session.  The group decided that we could develop a case study/ role play exercise to have on hand if time permits.  This may be a good session in which to mention the new Webportal being developed by another Cancer Plan project team.

Still need a moderator for this session and contacts for the resource panel.

Publicity

The group listed a variety of resources to use to publicize the cancer course:

·        CHW Peer Network

·        CHW Comm. Colleges

·        Public health agencies

·        CHW Policy Council

·        Agencies identified in CHW workforce study

·        MDH - EHDI grant managers/ Rainbow Research

·        Luanne Nyberg listserv

·        Ann O'Fallon listserv

·        Various community calendars (e.g. - Pillsbury United Communities, CommonBond Communities)

·        Tribal grantees

There will also be scholarships available for registration (information will be in the conference brochure) and for travel.  We must decide on a criteria for determining scholarship need.  We also need an organization to house the scholarship funds.

Pat R. will check on how to get the word out to the public health agencies

Anne W. will take the lead on some of the CHW contacts

Andrea will take the lead on the CHW Network and drafting an email to send out to all the contacts

Megersa will get the final brochure to attach to the email

Andrea is drafting a scholarship application.

Discussed either a cap on the amount. Must be a certain distance for travel.
