Niccu presented her impressions and ideas about utilizing a Peer Educator “Train the Trainer” model. This model informs community women and empowers them to act as their own advocate around health issues.

 

Provided training to African lay educators in session 1 of a project being undertaken by Dr. Kate Onyeneho, Center for Africans New to America

 

Trainers need to be sensitive to immigration experience and to best pathway to deliver education, oral, visual

 

 

 

 

New member from Planned Parenthood, Migdalia leads many groups that use peer educator model in the Hispanic community

 

Also, Peer Education Project in West African community being led by Frederick Ndip

 

Welcome new member:  Migdalia Loyola from Planned Parenthood New member from Planned Parenthood leads many groups , peer education / Hispanic

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Used IHEA language and culturally appropriate materials – well received.

 

 

 

Model could be replicated in other communities, Hmong, Oronoco, Russian, Pilipino, etc.

 

Marva did fund Dr. Kate Onyeneho project – treat as a pilot.  Evaluate – then consider other communities for “Train the Trainer” approach

Megersa’s position will end June 30th due to funding.

 

 

 

Adverse reaction HPV vaccine   syncopal episodes. Occurring L age 16 and when mixed with other vaccines need clarification

 

 

Merck pulling back from supporting mandate – HPV vaccine

 

 

Peer educator program Center for New American – Dr. Kate Onyeneho.

Project was a Peer Educator training project, breast cancer focus, navigating medical system, nutrition, and physical activity, prostate and lung cancer, addressing barriers and a “toolkit” for community and home-based education.

 

Experiencing delay as IRB approval is still pending & need to provide more information to Islamic center of MN

Ex: Somali Confederation, African Community Services

 

Important to look at what’s been done already.

 

Niccu will begin to summarize outcomes           begin to identify possible communities for a “Train the Trainer” project

 

Excellent success keeping projects going and bringing organizations into MCA.  Gay and Megersa to meet soon to discuss tasks of cervical team.

Senator Solon also pulling back from mandate and considering establishing Cervical Advisory Group

 

 

 MaKeisha and Elizabeth will be withdrawing from the project and assessing other opportunity to develop “Train the Trainer” projects

When Women’s Cancer Resource Center closed, PWP funding on hiatus. Now WCRC has sold building and returned funding

 

 

Message has become complicated, Paps – how often, HPV tests, vaccines, how often to screen  MOC group MN Outreach Coalition reports episodes of variance between educational messages and what provider may tell patients

 

After educational presentation MOC will start to work on simplification of message accurate, easy to understand.

 

Providers may have constraints in discussion cervical screening with patients (time, lack of educational materials).Patients may see different providers, hear different guidance and not have good understanding of what medical test and how often

1.     Cervical cancer screening will be provided to MOC

Office of Minority and Multi-cultural health Hispanic Outreach workers will be invited also, and others

March 15th – Pat Radabaugh will present

 

Goal:  Accurate, easy, simple to explain message – consistent

 

 

Niccu wants to remind about literacy in the development of cervical message
