An
estimated 11,830 Hispanic men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer
in 2006, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic men
according to Cancer Facts & Figures 2006-2008. An estimated 1,140 deaths from prostate
cancer are expected among Hispanic men in 2006, making prostate cancer the
third leading cause of cancer death.
Barriers:
- No medical insurance
- Immigration
- Language
- Cultural Myths
Learning Objectives:
- Effectively adapting programs to meet unique community
needs.
- Latino
men willingness to get screened if they had access to care.
In
2006 the American Cancer Society developed a Latino Men Prostate Cancer
Education and Screening Initiative. The
objective of this initiative is to educate Latino men between the ages of 35
and above about early prevention and detection of prostate cancer and promote
screenings. With the collaboration of
many Latino community base organizations, we perform monthly Prostate Cancer
Education sessions and refer the men to two prostate free screening programs in
the Twin Cities.
To
date, 93 Latino men have been educated in the Twin Cities and 13 of them have received
DREs and PSAs thru the free Prostate screening programs.
