North Minneapolis Prostate Screening Project - American Cancer Society
The
American Cancer Society Health Disparities Department has partnered with North Memorial
Medical Center
and Jordan Area Community Council to implement a free prostate education and
screening program in north Minneapolis
for men over 45 years of age. Men
without health insurance and live in north Minneapolis are encouraged to
participate.
Urologists
from various Urology groups volunteer to provide Digital Rectal
Examinations. Prostate Specific Antigen
(PSA) tests are provided by North
Memorial Medical
Center. Monthly sessions are held at NorthPoint Health &
Wellness Center and
West Broadway- North Memorial Clinic in North Minneapolis.
Alliance members who are not currently
offering this program can join forces to promote this free education and screening
program. Grass-roots organizations and
community clinics are encouraged to collaborate with the American Cancer
Society to provide this program throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
Attributes
of the Prostate Screening Program:
- Aligns with
Minnesota Cancer Alliance's priorities- primarily reducing disparities in
cancer screening and treatment
- Focuses on
serving those most in need including the uninsured and underinsured
- Collaborates
with community-based organizations, institutions of faith and clinics and
hospitals to provide the services in diverse communities
- Provide
on-site prostate screenings at community clinics
