Prevention Issues from Summit 2003

Prevention Issues

Diet

  • Unhealthy food choices in school
  • Need to promote healthy eating habits
  • Message is confused about diet and cancer
  • How  programs are funded is also a barrier

Tobacco Use

  • Influence of industry, marketing, advertising
    • Tobacco excise taxes and smoking bans affect everyone but political arena is a barrier.
    • Mapping data by congressional district.  Who can effectively deliver this message to legislators?
  • Timeframe for prevention to pay-off often decades.  People need to look at long-term benefits.
  • Cultural issues regarding tobacco use in Native American population.

Communication

  • Communication is a challenge and crosses workgroups
  • Lack of infrastructure to deliver the prevention message ($) - (vs. treatment infrastructure)
    1. No simple media message about how to get colo screening.  Ex: virtual colonoscopy confusion.  Need to come up with consensus to messages public can trust statewide.
  • Need to address cultural barriers - know the audience - needs, messages
  • Prevention messages-- Need to think of medical public, public, and politicians

Rural Disparity

  • Include out state small towns in disparity efforts

Policy

  • Programs need funding
    • Use programs that are seen to be effective.  Once test programs - need support to develop partners in schools and get programs used.  Need funds to get effective programs used.
    • Limited resources at local level - cuts at county and municipal levels
  • No research dollars to fund policy issues and policy studies
  • Moving into action - evaluating the programs we do to see if they work

Family History

  • Genetics counseling needs to reach less advantaged populations
  • Hereditary predisposition - fear of discrimination

Research Dissemination / Health Education

  • Need to make scientifically supported information available
  • Get men involved in cancer prevention
  • Promote evidence-based prevention strategies
  • Skin Care Prevention has funding to evaluate dissemination
  • Rising health care costs.  How do we translate science into language purchasers speak about cost / science, and influence them?
  • Colorectal Screening - challenge for public / primary care

Environmental Links

  • How to measure environmental link to cancer prevention
  • Promote better living

Coordination

  • Could promote within medical centers / hospitals and bring speakers. Need to connect better
  • Need to increase collaboration and integration across continuum of care, use of complementary methods, area of self-care.  Really look at integration of care to increase collaboration around holistic approaches.
