BREAKOUT SESSIONS A: 9:30 – 10:20 a.m.
These sessions will provide an overview of the 2011 Minnesota Cancer Alliance initiatives, specifically new focus areas from the Cancer Plan Minnesota 2011-2016.
1. Raise It For Health Coalition / Tobacco Policy - Salon A Facilitator: Pamela Hayes, Minnesota Department of Health Presenters: Janelle Waldock, Blue Cross Blue Shield; Molly Moilanen, ClearWay Minnesota This session will discuss the benefits of significantly raising the price of tobacco products in Minnesota. Raising the tobacco tax has been proven to lower teen tobacco use, and encourage current smokers to quit.
2. Measuring Success: Minnesota Healthscores for Colon Cancer Screening - Dublin Facilitator: Ann Carlson-Davis, Get Your Rear in Gear Presenters: Laura Bloom, Minnesota Community Measurement; Brenda Paul, Minnesota Community Measurement Learn about public reporting of colon cancer screening rates for Minnesota medical providers and how it will change in the next two years. Join the discussion to determine how members of the Minnesota Cancer Alliance can use this information to increase colon cancer screening.
3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Roundtable Project - Belfast Facilitator: Dr. Alexander Levitan, Minnesota Cancer Alliance Presenter: Denise Dunn, Minnesota Department of Health This session will begin with an overview of HPV Vaccination rates among adolescent girls, including a review of the current recommendations and coverage in Minnesota. This presentation will be followed by a review of the proposed project plan to host a roundtable discussion of experts to help identify potential projects.

1. Minnesota Department of Health Partnerships and Statewide Obesity Initiatives - Salon A Facilitator: Pamela Hayes, Minnesota Department of HealtPresenter: Martha Roberts, Minnesota Department of Health This presentation will provide an overview of state obesity prevention initiatives targeting healthy eating and physical activity in Minnesota school, community, workplace, child care and health care settings. It will also describe future trends and promising practices for promoting community policies and best practices that make healthy choices the easy choice in Minnesota.
2. Beyond Access: Disparities in Cancer Screening Rates - Dublin Facilitator: Sharon Torodor, Blue Cross Blue ShielPresenters: Liesl Hargens, Stratis Health; Dave Johnson, HealthPartners Although lack of insurance is a significant barrier to cancer screening, screening disparities exits in Minnesota’s insured population as well. Learn more about cancer screening disparities in Minnesota’s population and join the discussion about what we should do to close these gaps.
3. Survivor Survey and Needs Assessment - Belfast Facilitator: Mari Damhof, Minnesota Cancer Alliance Presenter: Sarah Christensen, Mayo Cancer Education Center This session will introduce a new project to improve the connection between cancer survivors and support services. The first step is to conduct a needs assessment to better understand available resources. This information will be used to address gaps in resources and services.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS C: 1:15 – 2:00 p.m.
These sessions will provide education information regarding cancer control opportunities in Minnesota and beyond.
1. Statewide & National Radon Initiatives - Salon A Facilitator: Pamela Hayes, Minnesota Department of Health Presenters: Andrew Gilbert and James Kelly, Indoor Air Program, Minnesota Department of Health Compared to other states, Minnesota has some of the highest potential for radon-related lung cancers with MDH estimating that over 1/3 of Minnesotans are at increased risk. MDH staff is currently working with a collaborative network of partners throughout the state and nation to lower the incidence rate of radon-related lung cancer in Minnesota. This session will provide participants with a better understanding of radon, and an overview of current policy initiatives.
2. Clinical Trials Community Outreach - Dublin Facilitator: Andrea Lienberger-Jabari, Clinical & Translational Science Institute, University of Minnesota Presenters: Libby Gordon, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Leukemia & Lymphoma Society presents community outreach and education curriculum and discusses the importance of minority community participation in clinical trials.
3. Honoring Choices Minnesota - Belfast Facilitator: Michele Fedderly, Minnesota Network of Hospice & Palliative Care Presenters: Barbara Greene, Honoring Choices in Minnesota; Dr. Kent Wilson, Honoring Choices in Minnesota Honoring Choices Minnesota is a collaborative, community-wide public health initiative led by the Twin Cities Medical Society. The goal of Honoring Choices Minnesota (HCM) is to promote discussions about end of life choices and to assist health care organizations with the installation of a comprehensive advance care planning program.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS D: 2:10 – 3:00 p.m.
1. Indoor Tanning and Melanoma - Salon A Facilitator: Pamela Hayes, Minnesota Department of Health Presenter: Dr. DeAnn Lazovich, University of Minnesota This presentation will provide a summary of the evidence on the link between melanoma and indoor tanning, the populations most affected, and an overview of policy approaches Minnesota might use to decrease the risk.
2. Hereditary Cancer Risk Assessment - Dublin Facilitator: Barb Kunz, Humphrey Cancer Center Presenters: Dr. Robert Madoff, Chief-Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview; Mary Ahrens, University of Minnesota Medical Center Fairview The goal of this session is to review the subject of highly heritable cancer, discuss characteristics of high risk families, describe identified cancer genetic syndromes, view them in the context of a public health issue, and discuss strategies for health care providers to address the problem.
3. Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) - Belfast Facilitator: Michele Fedderly, Minnesota Network of Hospice & Palliative Care Presenter: Barbara Blumer, Barbara Blumer Law, PA The Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) has finalized and endorsed the state’s end-of-life medical form known as POLST, Provider Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment. This form is more specific than an advance directive and is signed by a patient’s provider, making it a medical order to follow a person’s wishes for their final days.
PLENARY PANEL: How Healthcare Reform Will Impact Cancer - Salon B, C, and D Moderator: Matt Schafer, State Government Relations Director – Minnesota, American Cancer Society
Panel members:
This panel will address health care reform at the federal and state level and its impact on cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship. Dr. Abraham will provide a snapshot of the Affordable Care Act, Assistant Commissioner Gilchrist will address state-level implementation and Ms. Maes-Voreis will discuss Minnesota’s pioneering efforts around health care homes.
